Why you should speak at an event?
We’ve hit that time of year again when the call for presentations for the itSMF UK conference opens up. Each year brings with it a mixture of excitement or trepidation of how good will this year’s submissions and ultimately the sessions themselves be?
I think we’ve been lucky (and have picked well!) in previous years and last year certainly a lot of people fed back on a large number of good and great sessions. Admittedly there’s always some that weren’t as good but that’s part of the constant challenge to minimise these.
But the real reason there is trepidation and why I’ve written this blog is that each year my biggest hopes are to uncover new and exciting stories (and new and exciting speakers – but in that order!). So this is a call to action for anyone who has, or may have a story to tell. Here’s why I think you should be speaking if you have one of these stories -
1) It’s a great experience – the conference itself is, but as one of the people there that the delegates are coming to see. It is and can be scary- but ultimately our speakers always enjoy the experience.
2) You’re taking the industry forward. Maybe a little altruistic for some but the ITSM industry is taken forward by the people in it and the work they do. The conference is a key part of this.
3) It’s good PR – for you and your company. And I don’t mean you’re going to get job offers flooding in or your company’s going to sell more – but undoubtedly if you present a good story well it looks good.
4) A good story should be told. Simple but true, if you’ve got a good story there’s an audience out there waiting to hear it and enjoy it.
So if you have an urge to speak, or think you have a good story to tell then grab the opportunity to share it with the (ITSM) world.
